Congratulations New Conductors

After a week of auditions and voting the Music Society has appointed two new conductors for the 2014/15 academic year.
The Society would like to thank all members who voted and, of course, all of those that auditioned. We only wish that we could have had you all!

A huge congratulations to our newly appointed conductors:

Choral Conductor 2014/15: Tom Lazell

Orchestral Conductor 2014/15: Owen Burton

Music Society visit the Wirral

On the 8th February the Music Society took a historic trip to the town of Meols on the Wirral. This was one of the first times in current memory that the Music Society has taken an ensemble outside of Wales in order to do a performance – we were shocked at the positive response that we received.

We arrived at the church in the afternoon ready for a busy schedule of rehearsals before doors opened.
As well as our Music Society choir we took lots of small groups and soloists in order to provide a wide range of music for our audience.
The groups and soloists included:
– Bangor University Music Society Flute Choir
– Bangor University Music Society Acapella Choir
– The Byetones
– Maddie Chitty
– Vikki Stanners
– Brad Thornborough
– Jess Pearson
– Hephzibah Leafe
– Ellie Lighton
– Emily Knowles

The audience that we received was wonderful and we would like to thank the members of the church for welcoming us into their place of worship so enthusiastically. We would also like to thank those that provided us hungry students with such lovely food and Laura Burton for taking so many pictures of us in action.

And of course – our fantastic conducting/accompanying duo (+Ellie Lighton – not pictured) for doing an amazing job as always!

Charity Pyjama Week!

Between the 27th and 31st of January Bangor University Music Society held a charity week in order to raise money for two children’s charities. The charities, chosen by society members, were:

– Banardos (National)
– Hope House (Local)
Overall, we managed to raise £80 throughout the course of the week.

Members were invited to come to rehearsals dressed in their pyjamas or onesies on both the Tuesday and Friday night. Of course, teddies were more than welcome!

At Wednesday’s Lunchtime Funtime members were invited to donate to the same causes. There were many wonderful acts and we all had a wonderful time!

Thursday’s social was the highlight of the entire week. Our social secretary, Robyn, organised a fantastic children’s party which saw many society members playing ridiculous children’s games (duck duck goose anyone?), culminating in a mass, department wide game of hide and seek. The prize for best hiding place has to go to Jack Davies! Emma Hembry also came away with a new friend having won the “Guess the Name of the Teddy” competition. It was a brilliant night for all!

Limited Edition Musoc Pencils!

The Music Society will be selling special limited edition pencils at rehearsals for the next few weeks. The pencils, costing 30p each, are available with English and Welsh text and would be perfect for marking up your scores in orchestra!
Buy your pencil from the refreshments stand during rehearsals.
